Photographs

Change is pending
20" x 13"
This photograph is of Caddy Lake taken as fall has completed its expression of colour and beauty.  Winter is about to set in, and the greys reflect the ominous nature of that change.  Its is not unlike the change we undergo as people reaching or starting to reach the senior years of our lives.  We know that the change is inevitable, but are unsure as to what those changes will be.  It can be both threatening or comforting depending on the person we are.

Colours fade

Taken of Caddy Lake this photograph is also an expression of change.  It has a sense of calm but the interpretation is always affected by the "baggage" we carry.

Spirit of the Lake
26" x 20"
This is a colour photograph of Caddy Lake which was converted to an infrared print.  For me it is an expression of the "spirit of the lake", it takes me to places "inside".  It has a bit of a magical sense for me.

Thanksgiving at Caddy Lake
24" x 26"
I was walking about looking at the colours and textures that come with fall.  As I stepped down to the lake, I saw two grandparents with their grandchild taking advantage of the magic that was about.  I took the photograph but it lacked the "feel" that I wanted.  I made some adjustments to the image, and the result is displayed.  Memories often loose detail as time goes by, the feeling that we associate with those memories however seem to linger undisturbed.

Provencher Bridge

 The Blue Dress
This is a photograph of a black and white photograph taken just after World War 1.  I reworked the image by adding colour using Photoshop to do so. It is an attempt to recreate an old style of photography when colour was added by hand tints after the shot was taken.  The image is of my wife's grandmother.   As I worked on it, I kept seeing my wife's face and found the experience took me to a mind set that was very relaxing and yet a bit troubling as well.  I only met this person once when she was elderly and had already lost a lot of her independence due to age, but in spite of that there was a grace about her.  The image may document a  time, but for me it captures much more.  To me it has captured a mind set, a time, a period of grace.  She possesses a soft elegance yet has a sense of one that may have stirred and perhaps empowered those around her.  These are elements or parts of my wife's personality and I suspect that she carries these from her grandmother.  As I think of it, it becomes a statement of aging, how we begin with an energy, our own view of where wish to go, but the reality is that time will eventually catch us and regain control over our lives.  We have only a brief window to pursue our dreams and goals before we reach the threshold where time begins to take over and regain its power of direction.  This window is a time of beauty, one that we should enjoy and maximize to the best of our ability.  These were the thoughts running through my mind as I worked on this piece.

time was....

I found this photo which was taken in 1942, it was a black and white print.  I reworked it in photoshop, trying to recover as many details as possible.  I added colour in an attempt to recreate an image from that era.  It is a picture of my parents and my oldest brother, in spite of that it, I feel it simply makes a statement of a time that no longer exists.
