Linocuts

I started taking photographs of local, Winnipeg musicians at various venues, primarily at the Cube during the Winnipeg Jazz Festival.  I converted many of the photos to drawings which I transferred on to Linoleum and proceeded to make linocuts.  I had originally printed these in black, but then began to experiment with paper cutouts adhered directly to the print.  I will be editioning some of
these images, and have more to complete.  These will be posted as they are completed.

Assembly
22" x 30"
Paper Collage
The idea for this image came from a photograph I took of  Derrick Gardner while playing at the Cube in 2014.  The image is reversed and was my first experiment with collage.

Jazz Ensemble
22" x 25"
limited edition - 3

This is a combination of 3 linocuts and coloured paper cutouts placed together to form the single image.

Blue

limited edition - 5
11" x 13"
linocut and paper collage

Can't really contribute this image to anyone in particular.  I always like to watch the Bass, whether its a guitar or stand up.

Magic Hands

limited edition - 5
12" x 9"
linocut and paper collage

I had an opportunity to see and photograph George Reznick at his farewell gig at the Pembina Hotel. Those who used to go for the music on Saturday afternoons will remember his band.
I made a drawing of the photograph, and then made a black and white linocut.  George was 82 when he played that afternoon.  This print is for you George, a thank you for those afternoons at the "Pemby".

Orleans

14" x 9 "
limited edition - 5
linocut and paper collage

I saw Derrick Gardner doing the noon show at the Cube in 2014.  I not only enjoyed the music but his overall presentation as he played.  The image is a combination of linocut and paper collage.

"Jump"

12" x 9 "
linocut and paper collage

Cristien Lyons of Latino Combo is the source of this image.  It began as a black and white linocut but after seeing them play, the image simply called for more.   I introduced colour via paper cut outs.

Expression

14" x 10"
limited edition- 10
linocut and paper collage

I am uncertain as to the identity of this musician.  I failed to get his name when he played during the noon show at the Cube in 2014.  His facial expressions as he played, led me to experiment a little with his overall presentation.   I intentionally distorted his image, not unlike the facial expressions he had while playing.

Neil Watson at the Cube

22" x 30"
limited edition -10
Linocut

I was able to catch a profile shot of Neil while he played.  I am always amused when watching him play.  In spite of other band members on stage, he seems to enter his own "little space", as he lets the music take him.  That is why, he is the lone figure in this print, no distractions.

Stand up

13" x 10"
limited edition - 10
linocut

This is a linocut of Christien Lyons , his presence on stage calls for a study of his eyes.  To me, they express whats going on, as he works through his music.

Jazz Duo

14" x 20"
limited edition  -10
linocut with paper collage

Jay Harrison is the source of the image on the left.  His intensity as an artist can be seen in the lines on his face.  The linocut medium lends itself well to that expression.  Although he and George Reznick did not share the stage at Jazz Fest, I took the liberty of combining both images for this print.

Assiniboine Cocktail

Self Study
9" x 10"
